Chapter Five

“A messenger has just arrived from London, Your Grace,” Humphries announced from the open doorway to the duke’s study. “With messages for you and Captain Coventry.”

The duke and Coventry rose at the same time and followed the butler to the stable. Each man read the missive addressed to them. When they were finished, they locked gazes.

“Do you want one of my men to accompany you?”

Coventry could barely contain the overwhelming feeling of dread that filled him at the stark message. He held the duke’s gaze for long moments before speaking. “I’d rather all of your men stay here where they are needed. Michael and I will be fine.”

The messenger stood next to his horse, waiting. “Is there a reply, Your Grace?”

“No need, thank you.” He signaled to one of the stable lads who rushed over to take care of the man’s horse. “Our cook has something for you to eat while your horse is being cared for. If you’ll follow me.”
